Aims and scope:
Ukrainian is not only the second largest Slavic language, with some 46 million speakers around the world. Studying Ukrainian gives students a unique opportunity to discover the psychology, history, and culture of a land that for centuries has been a battleground of rival empires. With affiliated centres in Chernivtsi, Zhytomyr and Odessa, and independent members across the country, the EUROSCI Network is uniquely placed to help students learn Ukrainian language and culture. With Ukrainian you have an important tool for understanding the growing political and economic power of Ukraine in the European context, as well as the pressing challenges that the country currently faces. This course aims to provide students with some elementary knowledge of Ukrainian language. After successfully completing this course, students should be able to (1) understand and use familiar everyday expressions and very basic phrases in Ukrainian aimed at the satisfaction of needs of a concrete type; (2) introduce themselves and others and ask and answer questions in Ukrainian about personal details such as where he/she lives, people they know and things they have; and (3) interact in a simple way in Ukrainian provided the other person talks slowly and clearly and is prepared to help.
